Windsor Men’s First XI won promotion in style with a ruthless 5-0 drubbing of South Berkshire 3s.Playing at home in the last game of the season, all the pressure was on Windsor in a must-win game to take them up to Division 2.
But if the team was nervous it didn’t show as they pressed hard from the whistle and gave the visitors no quarter.
And in a breathtaking first five minutes, Billy Johnson set the pace with a terrific interception near the halfway line.
With South Berks caught napping, Johnson made a daring diagonal run from the left towards the D with only the keeper to beat.
And as the keeper committed, Johnson slipped the ball past him to open the scoring.
The early goal was a pivotal moment as Windsor took control and never looked back.
South Berks found it difficult to deal with the intensity of the home team’s game, finding themselves constantly under pressure and with no time on the ball.
And it was only a matter of time before Windsor made it 2-0 as Sean Wright gathered the ball outside the D and scored with a slick reverse stick shot.
Kevin Jones added another with a signature drag flick from a penalty corner.
At the other end, Windsor keeper Rich Sage was called into action with some terrific saves while Tom Pocock cleared off the line to deny South Berkshire.
The visitors ramped up their game in the second half but Windsor hit back on a counter attack to storm the opposition D.
Johnson was the first to react to a save and swept in his second and Windsor’s fourth with a reverse stick shot.
And they completed the rout with another counter attack on the left where Alex Weller passed to a dangerous looking Gareth Baber, lurking by the back post.
Baber coolly collected the ball and slipped it past the keeper to bury the game at 5-0.
The sensational win sees Windsor – captained by Yashraj Rampersad – promoted from MBBO Division 3 to Division 2 in the team’s first move up a league since 2011.
And the victory was the perfect way for the club to celebrate at its end of season awards ceremony at The Boatman, Windsor.
