Our sessions are led by our junior head coach Kevin Jones. Kevin has been managing director of a successful sports coaching business for the last 15 years, this business mainly focuses on coaching children in a variety of sports so he has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he brings in to our sessions to ensure the children are learning and enjoying themselves. Kevin has also taken over the role of our Ladies head coach in our senior side which means any girls who are ready to make the move in to senior hockey have a familiar face on Wednesday evenings.
Kevin is supported by a number of volunteer coaches who are all active, playing members of our club. Support from these coaches means that we are able to ensure a low player-coach ratio so that all of the children get the support that they need.
We are keen to develop our volunteer coaches through our ‘coaching pathway’ to maintain the high quality training that we aim to deliver. With support from Kevin they are able to work their way through our pathway to whichever level they desire.
All of our coaches are given an induction to our coaching system and child protection training from our safeguarding officer. They will also be given the chance to attend first aid training.
Coaching levels:
Level 1 - foundation experience. Coaches will leave a variety of warm-ups, exercises and sessions to ensure they are able to teach all fundamental skills to a high level and learn how to adapt exercises to ensure the coaching points of the exercise are working. They learn how to encourage and provide the ultimate environment for children to learn and enjoy hockey whilst keeping control and focus of a group of children.
Level 2 - build on coaching abilities from level one and understand how to teach match day skills and evaluate players and coach them individually to improve. They will know how to do an effective personal improvement plan and group improvement plan and design and adapt exercises to suit.
WHC senior coach - help lead and design session plans and help decide the direction of the players and the section as a whole. Have monthly senior coaches meetings to discuss player evaluations and training principles of the different groups. Help move players between groups to ensure they’re progressing.
